When fishing the River Torridge, you can fish for:
Salmon:

Apart from when fishing the weir pool on the Beam fishery there is no need for a double-handed rod. A rod of 10/11 foot is ideal. Floating line or if the river is falling and clearing after a spate a sink-tip line. At least 10lb breaking strain cast. A fault is often to fish a fly that is too big. Ask Adam or Charles for advice on flies depending on the river height. Thunder and Lightning, Cascades are favourites.
Brown Trout:

A rod of about 8 foot is ideal: anything longer can make casting difficult with overhanging branches. Floating line with a cast about 3lb breaking strain. The trout do not feed on the surface as much as they used to, but fishing a dry fly can still be successful and so enjoyable. Presentation is more important than imitation. Flies: GRHE, Black Gnat, Grey Wolf, Coachman are all favourites. If no trout are rising, fish a wet fly downstream in the runs or a nymph upstream. The trout in the Torridge are much larger than they used to be with fish regularly being caught over 1lb.
Sea Trout:
A rod about 9 foot 6 inches is ideal. Floating line with at least 6lb breaking strain cast. Best time is late evening as the light is changing. Fish a wet fly downstream towards the tail of a pool. Ask
Adam or Charles for advice and make sure you are fishing the best spot at the best time which is about one hour after sunset. Single silver bodied flies 8/10/12: Butcher, Teal and Silver. Mallard and Claret all work well on the Torridge. Work the fly by drawing in line, otherwise you won't feel the soft takes of the larger sea-trout.
